“In the summer, the days were long, stretching into each other. Out of school, everything was on pause and yet happening at the same time, this collection of weeks when anything was possible.” – Sarah Dessen
This summer has been jam packed for the YES! McDowell office youth staff. We’ve achieved one of our goals of creating a comprehensive tobacco prevention campaign strategy chart for McDowell County. By doing so we have realized the importance of partnering with different organizations in our community. These organizations include local community forums, our local YMCA and Community Engagement Project, the McDowell County Public School System and regional tobacco prevention partners.
This coming Fall we hope to partner with Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) partners, as well as our local food and health hub and the food advisory council. We are in the process of developing recruitment strategies in order to hire 2-3 new youth staff near the beginning of the upcoming Fall semester. Our large goal for the western NC-based office is to deepen our relationships to increase the impact of our work in Western North Carolina.
In pursuit of this goal we have helped to orient new youth staff in the YES! Asheville Office through the planning, facilitation, and participation in two retreats for the western offices. We have also been a part of the planning for the YES! All Staff Retreat taking place next week. At the All Staff Retreat we plan on actively engaging in deep racial equity conversations for YES! and for ourselves, focusing on team-building and vision for the future of YES!.
