Come to the Table Series: RAFI
Justice Gathering for food and faith leaders
May 1-2nd, 2019
Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Charlotte NC
On May 1st and 2nd, Liz Styron attended a Justice Gathering for Food and Faith leaders hosted by the Rural Advancement Foundation International-USA (RAFI) at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. The gathering convened faith and community leaders who are addressing issues of food justice to take a faithful look at how we attend to the work.
“Facilitated by amazing women of color such as Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh, founder of A Certain Work, and Rev. Dr. Stephanie Moore Hand, Vitality Specialist of the Metro District of the Western NC Conference of the UMC, the conference really helped me to deepen my own understanding of equity as it relates to food justice, land ownership/access, and the importance of story-telling. I’m thankful for the personal and collective wisdom that I gained by increasing my own critical awareness around symptoms versus systems, listening to the stories of resistance shared by others, and reflecting on my own values on belief systems. The space was sacred and the work we participated in by gathering together in the name of justice, equity, and inclusion was Holy.”
