This February, YES! in partnership with the N.C. Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch, The National African American Tobacco Prevention Network (NAATPN) and Truth Initiative is relaunching the “Make Smoking History” Black History Month Toolkit. The Toolkit is designed to provide college and high school students the resources to identify the effects of menthol tobacco product advertising and use in African American communities. We encourage high-school and college age youth and young adults to participate in this year’s first Instagram Contest to illustrate how menthol cigarettes and other tobacco products affect communities and campuses of color (please see below for details). Tobacco companies throughout history utilized aggressive marketing tactics and advertising which have resulted in 47,300 deaths in African American communities. In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned tobacco companies from producing flavored cigarettes, however as of 2018, the FDA still deems menthol as a non-flavor.
Download the entire Make Smoking History Toolkit for resources on how to take a stand against menthol on your campus and in your community!
