Youth Leader Trainings
Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!) offers a number of trainings and services to help support youth-led advocacy efforts through peer-to-peer education. With the YES! Youth Empowerment Model at its core, YES! trainings are interactive and action-oriented. We ensure that our youth partners gain a heightened awareness about their health issue of interest and learn how to identify and take advantage of opportunities to engage in local advocacy work to impact relevant adolescent health policies.

Health Issue Trainings
Alcohol 101
Investigates the impact alcohol abuse can have on individual health and in the community. Reviews emerging products and marketing tactics the industry uses to increase alcohol sales.
Real Food 101
A multi-faceted look into the U.S. food system, food injustices, agribusiness, school lunch programs, effects of food on the human body and the environment that has contributed to a lack of safe, affordable and accessible foods. RF101 engages youth in opportunities to dissect these complex issues and explore sustainable policy, environmental and system changes on the local and state level.
Active Living 101
A complex look inside the environmental structures, policies and systems in the U.S. that do not allow for active lifestyles. Examination of transportation systems, access to resources, safe places to play, financial burdens, school physical activity requirements, and the polices and that support an active and engaged lifestyle.
Tobacco 101
Explores basic tobacco information (including ingredients found in products) while allowing participants to discover the effects and consequences of tobacco use, secondhand smoke and emerging products. Advanced Tobacco trainings are available.
Access to Health Care 101
Breaks down the lack of access to proper health care as both an individual and communal problem. Defines school-based health centers as solutions for decreasing health disparities and engages youth in thinking critically about community change and advocacy for school-based health centers.
Youth Advocacy Trainings
Advocacy 101
Youth who attend this training should have a sound foundation in their health issue of interest. This session helps youth use their knowledge to advocate for a specific policy change. Youth will gain an understanding of advocacy, activism and diplomacy.
Topics include:
• Policy issues and action planning
• Working with the media
• Advocacy skills and campaigning
• Public speaking and group facilitation
• Environmental assessment
Media Literacy and Advocacy
This session helps youth understand media, marketing and social networking as they relate to youth culture, health outcomes and social injustices.
Topics include:
• Techniques used in tobacco, fast food and alcohol
advertising to target youth
• Media relations and advocacy
• Media spokesperson training
Merchant Education
This session covers current laws, compliance actions and
consequences for underage sale of age-restricted products
such as tobacco or alcohol in order to reduce access.
Topics include:
• How to educate merchants about minor sales laws
• Community Assessment and surveillance techniques
• How to access and understand direct marketing
campaigns by tobacco and alcohol companies within
stores.
